Commission examines possible regulatory measures on cryptocurrencies

Round table on cryptocurrencies

The Round Table discussed three main topics: implications of cryptocurrencies (virtual currencies) on financial markets, risks and opportunities arising from the use of cryptocurrencies, and recent developments of Initial Coin Offerings.

Participants had an exchange of views on how EU institutions, regulators and Member States should respond to the challenges of rapid technological development and how to take advantage of the opportunities it presents. So-called cryptocurrencies and the underlying blockchain technology have an impact on many sectors of the economy, including the financial sector.

Commission Vice-President Dombrovskis also outlined some conclusions drawn from the meeting and said that the Commission will continue to monitor cryptographic currency markets, together with other stakeholders such as the G20.
